These rings (or "aros de junca") are made of woven reed to create a stable base for a gourd (or "jicara") to rest on so it doesn't tip over.
Like in historical times, gourds are still used to drink cacao and cacao-containing beverages in Mesoamerica.
The rings are made in Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico.
