Why "Cacao Ceremony" Usually Isn't the Best Title for an Event

(Published Jan 12, 2026)

Let’s talk about the term “cacao ceremony.” (Watch the video below!)

The way it’s used is often problematic, most commonly when there’s not enough acknowledgement that the circle or journey is a modern creation and not a traditional practice. Even if people are very careful about cacao sourcing or visit farms in person. Even if people have Latin American heritage or go to train with indigenous elders.

Because the term “cacao ceremony” has captured the world’s imagination, in order to be true Cacao Allies we must put a little more effort into the way we talk about cacao. To be this careful might reduce some of the mystique around ceremonial cacao and the people who might attend an event. In other words, fewer people might come. But that serves the goal of also staying humble and not relying on myths and half-truths to become a "plastic shaman."

Thank you for being willing to look deeper into this controversial subject.
